Welcome to our Ornithology Lab

I am an adjunct professor at the Dept. of Biology and Zoology, and professor/advisor in the Postgraduate Program in Zoology, both at the Institute of Biosciences of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, where I am also the curator of the institution’s Ornithology Collection.

Additionally, I am the chair of the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee; member of the deliberative council of the Brazilian Ornithological Society (2020-2023), of which I am also former secretary (2005-2007); member of the Working Group on Avian Nomenclature (WGAN) of the International Ornithologists’s Union; technical advisor on nomenclature for the South American Checklist Committee (SACC) of the American Ornithological Society (of which I am an Elective member); and research associate at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University (Philadelphia, USA).

In this post I discuss what a list of bird species represents and how (and if) it is possible to compare different lists. At the end, I point out what the most recent data allows us to know and reflect on the value of such information.
